In today's world, our kids are constantly exposed to toxins from various sources—air, water, food, and even everyday household items. These toxin exposures cause inflammation in their bodies, leading to a range of symptoms and further impairing their detoxification systems. This can affect their brains, behavior, mood, overall health, and their ability to live to their full potential.

While there are many supplements and programs on the market that claim to help with detoxification, it's important to understand that detoxification is a complex process. It's not just about taking a supplement or following a program.

That's why, when working with families, I focus on a simple three-step blueprint that is at the core of my programs: Remove, Release, and Replenish. A significant part of the Remove and Release steps involves detoxification.

When it comes to detoxification, especially for kids, it's crucial to focus on light detoxification. Different children's bodies react differently to toxin exposures, and understanding this is the first step towards helping them.

In this article, we'll explore the importance of detoxification for kids and provide practical tips to incorporate detoxifying practices into your child's routine.

What is Detox or Detoxification?

Detoxification, or detox, is the body's natural way of cleansing itself from harmful substances. Our bodies are equipped with several detoxification organs, like the liver and kidneys, which filter and expel toxins. The lymphatic system also plays a key role in moving waste products so they can be eliminated rather than stored.

However, for this detox system to work correctly, several biochemical pathways need to function properly. One important pathway is the methylation pathway.

When it works as it should, it produces a powerful antioxidant called glutathione.

Glutathione helps the body detoxify efficiently, but if there’s a glitch in this pathway and not enough glutathione is produced, the detox system gets backed up. Toxins can then accumulate in the body instead of being flushed out.

Additionally, if the gut isn’t functioning well, toxins that should be eliminated can get reabsorbed into the bloodstream. This recirculates the toxins throughout the body, including the brain, affecting how the body processes these substances and leading to various symptoms in kids.

This can impact their brain function, behavior, mood, and overall health - so, pretty much everything.

Understanding how detoxification works helps us realize why it’s so important to support our kids' natural detox processes, ensuring their bodies can effectively remove these harmful substances.

When Detox Pathways Aren't Doing Their Job

Our bodies rely on several biochemical pathways to detoxify effectively. One crucial pathway is the methylation pathway, which helps produce a powerful antioxidant called glutathione. Glutathione is essential for a well-functioning detox system.

However, when there are issues in this pathway, not enough glutathione is produced.

Without sufficient glutathione, the detox system gets clogged, causing toxins to accumulate in the body instead of being eliminated.

Additionally, even if some toxins move through the system, problems in the gut can prevent proper elimination. When the gut isn’t working correctly, these toxins can get reabsorbed into the bloodstream.

This means that instead of being flushed out, the toxins circulate throughout the body, including the brain. This recirculation can affect how the body processes these substances, leading to a variety of symptoms in kids.

When detox pathways aren't doing their job, it impacts more than just the physical body. It can affect brain function, behavior, mood, and overall health - pretty much everything.

Understanding this helps us see why it's so important to support and maintain our kids' natural detoxification processes, ensuring they can efficiently eliminate harmful substances and stay healthy.

Do Some Kids Detox Better Than Others?

Do you find that some kids have more trouble with detoxification than others? Absolutely.

But why do these detox pathways get messed up in the first place?

The answer often comes back to toxins. Our bodies are designed to handle a certain amount of toxins and eliminate them effectively. However, the modern world is full of toxins, and kids are exposed to them every day, all day, unless we help them.

Children today are overfilled with toxic stressors.

When their bodies reach a point where they can't handle any more, or if they experience certain extreme exposures, it can trigger genetic susceptibilities.

These genes can affect their detox pathways, making them less efficient. This means that too many toxins can overwhelm their system, causing these pathways to malfunction.

This toxic overload leads to inflammation in their bodies, which in turn causes more symptoms and further impairs their detoxification system. This can affect their brains, behavior, mood, and overall health, preventing them from reaching their full potential.

Every child is different, and their bodies show us what’s wrong in the world through various health conditions.

Despite the differences in how these conditions manifest, the underlying issue is often the same: too many toxins.

To help our kids, we need to reduce their exposure to these toxins and support their natural detoxification processes. This will help reduce inflammation, reduce their symptoms, and allow them to thrive.

Why My Child?

Parents often wonder, "Why does my child react to gluten, while their sibling doesn't?" or "Why does one child have these symptoms, but not the other?" An analogy that helps explain this is the concept of a bucket.

Imagine that we're all born with a bucket, and our goal throughout life is to keep the load in that bucket low. Some kids and adults can easily empty their bucket, meaning they have good genetics that support their detoxification pathways. These individuals can handle and eliminate toxins efficiently.

However, other kids have a harder time emptying their bucket. They might have genetic factors that affect their detoxification pathways, making it difficult to eliminate toxins from their bodies. As a result, the load in their bucket keeps getting higher. Over time, if they cannot effectively empty their bucket, it fills up to the top and tips over, leading to various symptoms.

This is why one child may be fine despite exposure to heavy metals or environmental toxins, while another child shows symptoms.

The first child can empty their bucket and manage the toxin load, but the second child cannot, causing their bucket to overflow.

Understanding this analogy can help explain why some kids are more affected by toxins than others and highlight the importance of supporting their detoxification processes.

What Kind of Toxins Contribute to the Load on the Bucket?

When thinking about the toxins contributing to the load on our children's "buckets," it's astonishing to consider how many chemicals they are exposed to daily. Here are some key sources of these toxins:

Food and Water

Having a regular schedule makes sleep a normal part of your child’s day. It helps their brain and body get used to getting enough sleep.

  • Chemicals in Food: Many foods, even when washed, still contain chemicals. Pesticides, preservatives, and additives can remain in the food we eat.
  • Water Contaminants: Drinking water can contain various chemicals.

Filtering water and choosing organic food can significantly reduce this exposure.

Body Products

  • Skincare Products: What we put on the skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Opting for natural body products can help lessen this toxic load.

Home Environment

  • Household Items: Furniture, flooring, carpets, and mattresses can emit chemicals over time. Cleaning products and air fresheners also add to this chemical load.
  • Air Quality: Using air purifiers, opening windows, and choosing non-toxic furnishings can improve indoor air quality.

Electronic Devices

  • EMFs (Electromagnetic Fields): Electronics and WiFi emit EMFs. Encouraging kids to spend time outside can help reduce their exposure to these invisible toxins.

Heavy Metals

  • Prenatal Exposure: Children can be exposed to heavy metals even before birth, as they can be passed from the mother. This is not something to feel guilty about but rather something to be aware of.

  • Household Products: Many products may contain untested heavy metals.

Emotional Stress and Trauma

  • Emotional Toxins: Emotional stress and trauma can also fill up a child's bucket. Addressing emotional well-being is crucial for overall health.

Mold

  • Indoor Mold: Mold in the home can be a severe toxin. It's essential to check for and address any mold issues promptly.

Pathogens

  • Infections: Pathogens in the body can produce toxins that further burden the detoxification system.

Working with a practitioner to address these issues can be beneficial.

These toxins—both visible and invisible—contribute to the load on our children's buckets. When the bucket becomes too full, it can manifest as various symptoms, often showing up as behavioral, cognitive issues, or autoimmune conditions.

But really, these toxins can show up as any symptom, as your child’s reaction to them also depends on their genetic vulnerabilities.

Understanding these sources of toxins can help us take steps to reduce their impact and support our children's health.

There's a Lot I Can Do as a Parent

When thinking about the toxins contributing to the load on our children's "buckets," it's astonishing to consider how many chemicals they are exposed to daily. Here are some key sources of these toxins:

1. Reducing Toxin Exposure

  • Clean Diet: Remove chemical-laden and inflammatory foods from their diet. Opt for organic and whole foods whenever possible.

  • Natural Products: Use natural body products and household cleaners to reduce chemical exposure.

2. Supporting Natural Detoxification

  • Binders: Use binders, like activated charcoal or bentonite clay, to capture toxins in the gut and prevent them from being reabsorbed.
  • Nutrition: Incorporate nutrients that support detox pathways, such as magnesium, sulfur (from Epsom salt baths), and omega fatty acids.
  • Supplements: Consider supplements like glutathione to enhance detoxification. Pairing glutathione with a binder can be particularly effective.
  • Herbs: Use herbs that support liver and kidney function, like milk thistle and dandelion.

3. Lifestyle Changes

  • Outdoor Activities: Encourage outdoor play to reduce screen time and exposure to EMFs. Sunshine, fresh air, and physical activity help the body detoxify through sweating and lymphatic movement.

  • Reduce EMF Exposure: Unplug WiFi at night and limit the use of electronic devices to give their bodies a break from constant EMF exposure.

Take It Step by Step

Remember, you don’t have to make all these changes at once. Start with one or two small adjustments. Maybe switch to a natural cleaning product or incorporate an Epsom salt bath into their routine.

Gradually, these small changes will add up and make a significant difference in reducing your child's toxin load and supporting their health.

By taking these steps, you can help your child thrive in a world full of toxins, ensuring they have the best chance at living a healthy and vibrant life.

Much Love and Healing,

xx Bettina
