Dr. Scott Saunders
Urgent focus for Parents: Fixing your Child's Jaws, Face, Breathing, Sleep, and Brain as a Foundation for Health
Speaker Bio
Co-founder and president of Healthy Mouth Media, Dr. Scott Saunders received his DDS degree from Georgetown University School of Dentistry, and practiced general dentistry and periodontal wellness – he set out to be a healer.
He quickly became frustrated at how dentistry focuses primarily on fixing teeth, not healing the whole body; the worldwide epidemics of chronic disease; AND the overall lack of awareness of how deficits in jaw growth and development, airway, breathing, and sleep pivotally impact overall health and especially BRAIN HEALTH, beginning in childhood – and manifesting in adults with multiple chronic illnesses.
Scott soon realized that he was himself one of those adults…when he found out in his fifties that he had severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). He later came to realize that – like other chronic diseases - OSA is a global pandemic that is grossly underdiagnosed and, in general, not effectively treated. OSA predisposes a person to numerous chronic diseases including hypertension, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
Seeking to educate parents and health-care professionals on more proactive ways to address this cascade of chronic-disease epidemics by addressing impaired oral health, breathing, and jaw growth-and-development issues EARLY, Scott now focuses his writing and expert-reporting efforts on raising awareness in both groups on how to spot these critical issues in childhood when they’re most correctable.
Scott - and his wife and HMM co-founder and COO Bonnie Benjamin - have produced five Functional Oral and Airway Health Summits, for which they interviewed over 100 medical and dental experts in the space of oral health, sleep, breathing, brain health, and total body health, and the many – and all-too-frequently overlooked - issues that affect all of these. Their most recent Summits have focused on solving such issues in childhood so kids can grow optimally to have the healthy adult lives they deserve.
